Die von MJJ Music unter Vertrag genommene Band Brownstone hat ihr Mitglied Charmayne Maxwel bei einem tragischen Unfall verloren. Sie sollten sich als Marke etablieren und einen Namen bilden, an den sich die Leute für immer erinnern werden, riet ihnen Michael Jackson.
Das Brownstone Mitglied Charmayne “Maxee” Maxwell zog sich am Wochenende tödliche Verletzungen am Hals zu. Ihr Mann fand die 46-Jährige auf dem Boden liegend mit einem zerbrochenen Glas. Es wird von einem Unfall ausgegangen.
Charmayne Maxwell war Mitglied vom R&B Trio Brownstone, die angeblich als erste Band von MJJ Music unter Vertrag genommen wurde. Beim offiziellen Musiklabel von Michael Jackson, das bei Neuverhandlungen mit Sony Music betreffend Michael Jacksons eigenem Aufnahmevertrag, aus der Wiege gehoben wurde. (Sony hatte Ende der 80er Epic Records und diverse weitere Labels von CBS aufgekauft)
MJJ Music Präsident Jerry Greenberg hatte die Band Michael Jackson vorgeschlagen, der sofort begeistert war. Ihre 1994 erschienene Single „If You Love Me“ kletterte auf Platz 8 der Billboard Charts und wurde für einen Grammy nominiert.
Das Debut Album “From the Bottom Up“ erschien 1995. Das Nachfolgewerk „Still Climbing“ zwei Jahre später.
Ein anderes Bronstone Mitglied, Nicci Gilbert, berichtete in einem Interview von Michael Jacksons Ratschlag: „He gave us the advice that, like Coca-Cola; we should always conduct ourselves as a brand.“ Und: “ I remember him saying, “Don’t try to impress me because you’ve already impressed me enough to sign you and give you a record deal. Work on building a brand and building a name that people will remember forever.” That was the strongest advice that we ever got from him, it’s something that motivates me to this day.“
Nicci Gilbert weiter: „…we auditioned for him. We met Jerry Greenberg first. I can’t tell the full story because we are doing a book; that’s going to be exiting. The short story is that we met Jerry Greenberg, we auditioned for him, and he said he had someone else that he wanted us to meet. At the time we did not know who it was. We auditioned for a second time in a pitch black conference room. After the second audition was over, we discovered that Michael was there; of course we were extremely excited. Later on, we were told that Michael fell in love with us and wanted us to be the first artists signed to his record label.”
